Tunnels are a challenging environment for fire safety and a reliable system is critical. Jardine Engineering Corporation (JEC) supplied and installed a full fire services system to the Nam Wan Tunnel and two ancillary buildings in Hong Kong in 2007.

The Nam Wan Tunnel
Nam Wan Tunnel was opened to traffic in Hong Kong in December 2009. The twin-tube tunnel, built by the Hong Kong Highways Department, is 1.2km long and has three lanes. It has become an important part of transportation route linking major city towns in Hong Kong.

Project Scope
The installation included: a sprinkler system, hydrant and hose-reel system, an automatic fire alarm (AFA) smoke detection system, a gas flooding system (FM200), and fire extinguishers which provide full fire services protection to the tunnel. The fire services system plays an important role in ensuring the sustainability of the tunnel given the increased road traffic.
