Jardine Engineering Corporation (JEC) designed and installed Hong Kong’s first Super-oxygenation system at the Tung Chung Sewage Pumping Station for the HKSAR Drainage Services Department (DSD). The Super-Oxygenation facility is responsible for sewage septicity control in the rising main between the Tung Chung Sewage Pumping Station and the Siu Ho Wan Sewage Treatment Works.



Super-oxygenation Technology works by dissolving pure oxygen in the sewage water to raise its dissolved oxygen (D.O.) to a substantially high level (> 50 mg/l). By raising the D.O. level, sufficient oxygen is provided to create an aerobic environment that prevents the formation of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas which is responsible for the strong odors from the sewage. In addition to odor control, corrosion in the system and connecting pipe work is also significantly reduced because the corrosive sulfuric acid does not form in the absence of hydrogen sulfide (H2S).



JEC successfully pioneered the use of Super- Oxygenation technology in Hong Kong, and this project proved to be a crucial step in DSD accepting the newly developed technology as an effective way to combat sewage’s odor and reduce corrosion in sewage treatment systems and associated pipe networks.


JEC completed the project on time, without any interruption to the plant’s normal operation. JEC subsequently received the highest performance rating, ‘Very Good’, from the HKSAR Government.
